OU DIRECT INTRODUCED ‘PRODUCT AUTOMATION’
TO ONLINE PROGRAMIn breaking news from OU Kosher, OU Direct, the website available to all OU Kosher certified companies, became even more direct, Thursday, May 9, with the addition of Product Automation. This new feature includes a variety of options to make it easier and quicker for companies to maintain their certified product lists and to add new products.
“We are very excited to introduce the newest OU Direct feature,” declared Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of OU Kosher.
“Previously,” explained Rabbi Moshe Elefant, COO of OU Kosher, “companies had to fax or email their requests for a new product by using a form. The improvements allow the process to be entirely online, going right into the system.” Companies will be able to get their approval 24/7 he said.
The “Product Automation” initiative was under the Direction of Dr. Sam Davidovics, Chief Information Officer and Director of the Information Technology (IT) Department of the OU; and Rabbi Moshe Zywica, Executive Rabbinic Coordinator/Director of Operations of OU Kosher.
Product Automation will allow certified companies to:
- View all of their OU Certified Products (Schedule B) in multiple formats namely PDF, Excel and a new customizable grid;
- Add new products online;
- Copy products from one plant to another;
- Terminate products instantly online;
- View status of all submissions.
The new grid format allows for:
- Easy filtering and sorting of products;
- Easy navigation from one page to another;
- Increasing and decreasing the number of records that appear on each page;
- Viewing detailed product information, i.e. the plant(s) at which the product is produced, and the certification status of the product within each plant.
New products can be added to the Schedule B of one or more plants by simply completing an online form and clicking submit.
- One or many existing certified products can be copied to one or multiple plants;
- Product Certification can be terminated immediately at a specific plant or at all the plants where the product is produced;
- All submissions can be viewed online to determine the current status of each request.
It’s fast, simple and easy to use and is certain to make OU Direct an even greater asset.

- THE NUMBERS ARE IN – THE OU HAD A BUSY PASSOVER; DISSEMINATING KNOWLEDGE WAS AN ORGANIZATIONAL EFFORT April 12, 2013
The period between Passover and the Festival of Shavuot is a time of numbers for the Jewish people, with the daily counting of Sefirat HaOmer, for 49 days, leading up to Shavuot on the fiftieth day. At OU Kosher, it is also a time for reflecting on how the OU served the Jewish community in preparing for the holiday; tabulating the statistics reflecting that effort; and evaluating how the OU can further enhance its service to the community in observing the most complex of all Jewish holidays.
OU Kosher provided these services through its annual Passover Guide with its listing of products that are Kosher for Passover; its website, oupassover.org; its Passover Hotline; emails; its smart phone App, now in its second year; and radio programs and community visits. But it did not do this alone.
“Passover was a combined effort of different departments of the Orthodox Union, working together with Kashrut to produce the materials we disseminated to the kosher consumer,” declared Rabbi Menachem Genack, chief operating officer of OU Kosher. “Working with Dr. Sam Davidovics, chief information officer of the OU; Mayer Fertig, chief communications officer; Gary Magder, director of Digital Media and their staffs, the materials were produced in the various formats needed to deliver our message. The entire effort was overseen by Rabbi Moshe Zywica, executive rabbinic coordinator and director of kashrut operations; and Rabbi Eli Eleff, rabbinic coordinator and consumer relations administrator of OU Kosher.”
“Passover preparation at the Orthodox Union is like a symphony,” Rabbi Genack continued. “The different parts of the orchestra must work together to produce beautiful sounds. OU Kosher provides the knowledge base, but our colleagues in the other departments made it possible to transmit this knowledge worldwide.”
Here is how the OU provided that knowledge:
- The OU Guide to Passover had a print run of 60,000, with distribution to OU synagogues, and to yeshivot and supermarkets throughout North America; it was also available online.
- The OU Kosher Consumer Hotline was truly hot, answering 5,032 phone calls, not counting calls that went to voicemail or callers who did not call the Hotline directly. While on hold, callers were given recorded answers to the top ten questions received by OU Kosher this season;
- The highest volume was 471 calls answered on Monday, March 18;
- Starting ten days before the holiday, the Hotline was staffed by a team of 18 rabbis and five assistants answering the phone, and a fulltime staff of three answering and researching emails;
- With the holiday beginning on Monday night, the Hotline was open both Sunday and Monday; the OU was the only one of the major kashrut agencies to be open on Monday, erev Pesach;
- On Sunday, March 24, 91 calls were received in two hours; on Monday, 162 phone calls in three hours; on Friday, March 29, Chol Hamoed Pesach, 140 calls were answered in three hours.
- Regarding the website, there were more than 80,000 unique visitors during the Passover season, with more than 300,000 page views;
- The highest visit day was the Sunday before Passover, with more than 12,000 unique visitors; Erev Pesach there were more than 8,000 unique visitors; while the average day for the two weeks before the holiday was 5,000 visits.
- The weeks before the holiday brought in more than 1,200 emails, with more than 100 per day as the Festival approached.
- The OU Kosher App for smart phones, which is available year-round, but was adapted for Passover for consumers on iPhones, iPads, iPods, iPod Touch and Android, had more than 5,000 downloads in the weeks before Passover.
The Kashrut Department went beyond technology to provide assistance for the holiday.
- Rabbi Moshe Elefant, chief operating officer of OU Kosher and the OU’s world-renowned Daf Yomi maggid shiur, appeared every night for three weeks on Zev Brenner’s Talkline Show, responding to a wide variety of questions with his limitless knowledge and his ability to clarify even the most complex aspects of the Festival; other radio appearances were made by Rabbi Yoel Schoenfeld and Rabbi Eli Gersten on the JM in the AM program; and Rabbi Nachum Rabinowitz on an online program hosted by Rabbi Yosef Wikler, editor of Kashrus Magazine;
- OU Kosher Rabbinic Coordinators made community visits: Rabbi Yosef Grossman, Rabbi Elefant and Rabbi Rabinowitz to Lakewood, NJ; Rabbi Rabinowitz to Boston; Rabbi Eleff to Brooklyn; and Rabbi Daniel Nosenchuk to Monsey, NY.
- Once again, there was an online pre-Passover webcast with the Kashrut Department’s two halachic poskim, Rabbi Hershel Schachter and Rav Yisroel Belsky. Rabbi Dr. Eliyahu Safran, OU Kosher vice president of communications and marketing, served as moderator.
It has been said that OU Kosher begins preparing for next year’s Passover the day after this year’s holiday is over. That means that even as the counting of Sefirat HaOmer proceeds, planning is already in progress for Passover 5774 at the OU. The first seder is April 14, 2014.

- OU KOSHER ANNOUNCES SPECIAL EXTENDED HOTLINE HOURS BEFORE PASSOVER: March 12, 2013
SUNDAY, MARCH 24 (10 A.M.-NOON), AND MONDAY, MARCH 25 (10 A.M.-1P.M.)
OU Kosher announces special extended hours of the OU Kosher Hotline to assist with Passover preparations—from 10:00 a.m-12 noon on Sunday, March 24, 2013 and from 10:00 a.m-1:00p.m on Monday, March 25, 2013 (the night of the first seder.)
The OU Kosher Hotline is 212-613-8241.
“This is the first year the OU Kosher Hotline will be open on Sunday,” remarked Rabbi Moshe Elefant, OU Kosher chief operating officer. “Our extended hotline hours are yet another service OU Kosher provides to make us the world’s most recognized kosher symbol and also the top destination for kosher information year-round—particularly regarding the challenging preparations for Passover.”
“Last year, we received 150 calls on erev Pesach alone, when the OU Kosher Hotline was open for three hours,” shared Rabbi Eli Eleff, OU Kosher rabbinic coordinator and consumer relations administrator. “Callers thanked us profusely for being open to help with their questions; and many last-minute calls came from rabbis, as were calls from people who had been told by their rabbi to contact the OU. In fact, inquiries were received about products certified by other kosher organizations, as we were informed that the OU was the only agency open to help consumers during that time. We are proud to offer these extended hours once again.”

- OU KOSHER’S RABBI MOSHE ELEFANT JOINS TALKLINE WITH ZEV BRENNER LIVE EACH NIGHT LEADING UP TO PASSOVER March 8, 2013
Rabbi Moshe Elefant may be most closely identified as Chief Operating Officer of OU Kosher and the magid shiur of the Orthodox Union’s Daf Yomi webcast (whose 1,800 learners a day around the globe make his lectures the most popular Daf in the world). For listeners of the popular Talkline With Zev Brenner radio program, Rabbi Elefant’s name has additionally become strongly identified with the Passover holiday, as he joins the host on air the for the weeks leading up to the holiday.
The program airs Monday-Thursday 8-9:00p.m. on WSNR 620 AM for the New York Metropolitan area and WJPR1640 AM for the Highland Park/Edison area. Saturday nights, the program runs 12 midnight-3:00a.m. on WMCA 570AM. Rabbi Elefant will appear every night until Passover.
“Rabbi Elefant comes from a position of great knowledge and strength, and is an individual who has received much respect from various segments of our community,” shared Mr. Brenner. “Listeners really find him refreshing because his knowledge is versatile enough to handle any questions we receive. He cuts across many backgrounds, and has become very popular over the years.”
For many years, Rabbi Avrohom Blumenkrantz, who compiled a yearly digest The Laws of Pesach, was Zev Brenner’s guest educator on Passover-related information. After Rabbi Blumenkrantz’s death in 2007, Mr. Brenner reached out to OU Kosher’s Chief Executive Officer Rabbi Menachem Genack to recommend someone from the OU who would have the knowledge of Jewish law and the personality to appeal to listeners. With his deep breadth of knowledge, warm personality and gift of humor, Rabbi Elefant was nominated for the job.
“Radio format is very personal, as people are able to communicate back and forth in discussions—that’s something you can’t do online or in the newspaper,” Zev Brenner said.
From his home in Brooklyn, Rabbi Elefant joins the show and stays on the air for as long as the conversations continue. “Sometimes I’m on the air with Zev for a half hour, other nights I’m there the full hour,” noted Rabbi Elefant. “The listeners submit the topics of discussion and they range through every possible question and situation—how to kasher a dishwater for Passover, how to deal with a potential situation at a Seder? What medications are permissible during Passover?”
According to Mr. Brenner, there was such interest in Rabbi Elefant’s participation on the Talkline show that this year, he brought Rabbi Elefant on air the week before Purim to respond to questions. “Jewish law instructs us to begin learning about the specific holiday laws a month in advance—we started even earlier!” note an amused Rabbi Elefant. “I hope I make my mother proud.”
Discussion questions each night for Talkline With Zev Brenner are taken from call-in listeners (212-769-1925), accepted by email (info@talklinecommunications.com); text the word ‘ZEV’ plus comments and/or questions to the number 21800; and from the Talkline With Zev Brenner Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/tcntalk/info). - IN TIME FOR PASSOVER 2013, OU KOSHER ANNOUNCES NEW “OU KITNIYOT” CERTIFICATION SYMBOL February 28, 2013
OU Kosher, the world leader in Passover preparation and kosher certification, today announced a new symbol of authorization for Passover products: OU Kitniyot.
The new symbol of authorization will appear on packaging with the explanatory message: OU Kitniyot: Acceptable for those who consume kitniyot on Passover.
Among the better known customs of Passover is the concept of kitniyot (legumes such as beans, corn, lentils, millet, mustard, peas, poppy seeds, rice, sesame seeds, soybeans and sunflowers), which are avoided by Ashkenazic custom, yet are consumed by those of Sephardic descent. The custom of Ashkenazim not eating kitniyot goes back to at least 13th century France and was instituted because kitniyot are often grown in close proximity to the five grains (wheat, oat, spelt, rye and barley); and because kitniyot can be easily confused with leaven (chametz) or the other way around.
Non-Ashkenazic Jews follow the ruling of Rabbi Yosef Karo (1488-1575) who permits the consumption of kitniyot on Passover. Even then, caution must be taken because the kitniyot may be processed in ways that render them non-permissible to the Sephardic population.*
“Previously, the OU has not issued certification for retail kitniyot products for Passover due to the concern that different symbols of kosher authorization might confuse consumers,” explained Rabbi Moshe Elefant, OU Kosher chief operating officer. “The OU Kitniyot symbol is presented in such manner so as to avoid any confusion and the packages will not show Kosher for Passover except as indicated.”
The label is currently found on a limited supply of products, including: Hagada Cookies Series, Papachoudo Cookies, Osem Bamba, Neptune Spices and Shkediya Sunflower Seeds. These products are manufactured with similar high supervision standards to those of other OU Passover productions, Rabbi Elefant noted.
“While OU Kosher has for years been approving OU industrial kitniyot products for the benefit of the Sephardic community, this has been in the realm of industrial and institutional ingredients,” stated Rabbi Nachum Rabinowitz, OU Kosher senior rabbinic coordinator. “This decision was taken at the urging of our poskim (decisors of Jewish law), to benefit the many kitniyot consumers who relied on various assumptions—rather than actual certification—for kitniyot Passover products.”
For the most up-to-date information on all OU Kitniyot and OU Kosher for Passover products, go to www.ou.org/passover. OU Kosher certified products for Passover can also be found using the free OU Kosher phone App, for iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, and Androids.

For better ease and clarity of consumer use, the OU Kosher Department has introduced a revised website, www.oukosher.org, and Passover website, www.oupassover.org, that are now available for use.
Rabbi Menachem Genack, chief executive officer of OU Kosher, declared: “OU Kosher strives to provide dynamic responsive solutions to the kosher community. In addition to the ability to search for more than 600,000 products, manufactured in nearly 8,000 plants, in more than 90 countries around the world, the App provides the most up-to-date kosher alerts; new product updates; and allows easy access to ask a question or to call the OU Kosher Hotline.”

- OU Kosher Plans Many Pre-Passover Programs February 22, 2013
AS PASSOVER APPROACHES, A PLETHORA OF OU KOSHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE SET FOR FLATBUSH, WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, BOSTON, LAKEWOOD, AND OF COURSE, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
The weeks leading up to Passover are very busy in Jewish organizations, just as in Jewish homes, so it is no surprise that OU Kosher will present six rabbis participating in five kashrut education programs in six days, from Tuesday, February 26-Sunday, March 3. They will be followed by another program on March 19 involving a seventh rabbi. Rabbi Yosef Grossman, Senior Educational Rabbinic Coordinator of OU Kashrut, organized the shiurim.
The programs are made possible by a grant from the Harry H. Beren Foundation of New Jersey.
Rabbi Grossman explained, “OU Kosher is most gratified to be called upon by students of Torah and kosher consumers the world over to provide quality kashrut education given by our renowned experts. The Harry H. Beren ASK OU OUTREACH program is proud to partner with Yeshiva Torah Vodaath; the Kollel of Greater Boston; the Melbourne, Australia Beth HaTalmud Kollel; Mt. Sinai Synagogue in Washington Heights; and the world famous Torah citadel, the Lakewood community at Khal Lev Avos for Advanced Seminars in Kashrut. We are extremely pleased to be able to keep pace with the frenzied schedule of shiurim on Pesach and a broad range of other kashrut subjects which the public has requested from us in the hectic pre-Pesach period.
The programs are as follows:
• On Tuesday, February 26, a special ASK OU Outreach program comes to Yeshiva Torah Vodaath in Flatbush beginning at 7:00 p.m. as Rav Yisroel Belsky, Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and OU halachic decisor (posek) will speak in his own yeshiva on “The Mesorah of Kosher Birds,” which will include the Machlokes Rosh and Rashba concerning one community accepting the mesorah of another community. His presentation will be followed by Rabbi Chaim Loike, OU Rabbinic Coordinator and bird expert, presenting a Lehavdil bein Hatameh Uven Hatahor Workshop, and by a Workshop on Making a Proper Shechitah Knife with expert shochtim. (Registration is required for this workshop.)
• In one of OU Kosher’s most unique programs, “The World of Kashrus,” on Thursday, February 28, Rabbi Moshe Klarberg, OU Senior Rabbinic Coordinator and Group Leader of the OU’s Meat Division, will participate in the third of OU Kosher’s skype programs to the Kollel Beth Talmud/Yehuda Fishman Institute in Melbourne, Australia, where it will already be the next day. His topic will be The Kashrus of Meat.
• An OU Kashrut Weekend at Mt. Sinai Jewish Center of Washington Heights, a program in the Harry H. Beren OU Outreach series, and the first two-day Beren Foundation program, will be held, March 2-3. March 2, Shabbat, Parshat Ki Tisa, there will be a Kashrut Q&A Session with Rav Hershel Schachter, OU Kosher posek and Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel of the RIETS seminary of Yeshiva University; the session will be held during Seudah Shlishit following Mincha at 5:20.
• On Sunday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., in the same location, Rabbi Loike will speak on Preserving the Mesorah of Endangered Kosher Species of Birds: A Live Presentation (featuring his feathered friends). It will be followed at 8:30 p.m. by Proper Checking of Fruits and Vegetables with Rabbi Yosef Eisen, Rabbinic Administrator of the Vaad HaKashrus of the Five Towns and Rockaway and former OU Rabbinic Coordinator for food service. Both days’ programs will have free admission and are open to both men and women.

- OU KOSHER CERTIFIED SARATOGA SPRING WATER CHOSEN FOR PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION February 11, 2013
The Saratoga Spring Water Company has been bottling spring water products on the same site in upstate New York since 1872. In those 140-plus years many honors have been bestowed upon this historic brand, not the least of which was announced last summer when Senator Charles Schumer chose the company’s iconic cobalt blue glass bottles to be served at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration.
The company’s unflavored spring water products, both sparkling and non-sparkling, are certified Kosher, pareve and for Passover by the Orthodox Union. The OU issues annual certification and performs random audits of member facilities. The symbol is recognizable on the front panel of the bottle so that Saratoga Spring Water can be enjoyed any time of the year, included in pareve food preparation or enjoyed by itself without limitation.
During the announcement, which took place on picturesque Geyser Lake under the company’s original slate-roofed pavillion, Senator Schumer professed his long-standing loyalty to the brand:
“Saratoga Spring water has long been one of my beverages of choice, so when given the opportunity to share its iconic blue bottle with hundreds of guests at the Presidential Inauguration, it was a no brainer,” he said. “After touring this impressive bottling facility, I am thrilled to announce that Saratoga Spring will be served to official guests at the Presidential Inauguration. I am honored to have been selected to plan the festivities at the Presidential Inauguration, particularly because it allows me to showcase this iconic Capital Region company and its superior product at the 57th Inauguration in January.”
The Saratoga Spring Water Company came into existence in 1872 during the global emergence of health consciousness, and bottled water was de rigeur for maintaining “delicate constitutions.” The town of Saratoga Springs was globally renowned for its rich and varied spring water sources. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Saratoga Spring Water had garnered world renown.
Today, the Saratoga Spring Water Company is a privately-held business headed by owner and CEO, Adam E. Madkour. The company’s facilities have been automated for efficiency but proudly maintains its historic roots. “Our water has been enjoyed for almost a century and a half in every corner of the globe. We strive to honor our history while looking toward a bright future.” The company’s products are distributed in almost 40 states, and multiple countries worldwide.The post OU KOSHER CERTIFIED SARATOGA SPRING WATER CHOSEN FOR PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION appeared first on Kosher.
- IT’S A SMALL WORLD: RAV BELSKY’S WEBCAST SHIUR VASTLY APPRECIATED BY KOLLEL AUDIENCE IN AUSTRALIA December 5, 2012
Rav Yisroel Belsky, OU Kosher halachic posek, is an extremely soft-spoken man, but through the wonders of modern communications, his voice and image carried 10,300 miles as he conducted the first of a series of five monthly lectures on Skype from the experts at OU Kashrus in New York to the students at the Kollel Beth HaTalmud in Melbourne, Australia. A program of OU Kosher’s Harry H. Beren ASK OU Outreach initiative, the sessions will deal with various aspects of kosher law and their application to modern food technology.
The program is coordinated by Rabbi Yosef Grossman, OU Kosher Senior Educational Rabbinic Coordinator.
The first installment, held in late November, originated at 5:00 p.m. New York time, which was 9:00 a.m. the next day in Melbourne. An audience of more than 100 was present at the kollel for the webcast.
Rav Belsky’s shiur was on “The Mesorah of Kosher Birds and Animals.” Among the species he covered were the giraffe, buffalo, zebu, peacock, mallard duck, and Canadian goose. In response to a question from a shochet in New Zealand, OU Kosher’s bird expert, Rabbi Chaim Loike, brought in a live Indian Runner duck for Rabbi Belsky to determine whether or not the bird is kosher — it is.
Rabbi Yisroel Greenwald, project coordinator at the kollel, wrote to Rabbi Grossman, “Although we were geographically on the other side of the globe, everyone present at the shiur felt as connected to Rabbi Belsky as if he were actually sitting together with us is one room. Everyone at the kollel already knew of the Rav’s greatness in Torah, but we were equally amazed by his breadth of scientific knowledge and his ability to convey complicated Torah concepts in such an enjoyable manner.”
In another message, Rabbi Greenwald wrote, “Thank you, thank you for the unbelievable shiur! It was a masterpiece — everyone loved it — m’koton v’ad godol (We also loved the duck.) We had close to a hundred people and I am also looking into making a local showing in the evening for those in the broader community who were not able to attend. It’s a great opportunity to have the zechus to hear a shiur from an adom godol as Rav Belsky, and we are eagerly anticipating the others as well.”
The next program will feature Rabbi Chaim Goldberg on kosher fish, Thursday December 20, 5:00 p.m. New York time, which is Friday, December 21, 9:00 a.m. down under.The post IT’S A SMALL WORLD: RAV BELSKY’S WEBCAST SHIUR VASTLY APPRECIATED BY KOLLEL AUDIENCE IN AUSTRALIA appeared first on Kosher.
- OU, AVA Partner to Benefit Clients with Kosher, Vegetarian Products November 28, 2012
OU, AMERICAN VEGETARIAN ASSOCIATION, ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO BENEFIT CLIENTS WHO PRODUCE BOTH KOSHER AND VEGETARIAN PRODUCTS
OU Kosher and the American Vegetarian Association (AVA) are pleased to announce that they have recently partnered to more easily provide their clients who produce both kosher and vegetarian products with the opportunity to obtain OU Kosher and AVA Vegetarian certifications for their products.
Research has shown that obtaining such certifications greatly enhances the perception of quality among consumers. Even those who do not keep strict kosher or vegetarian diets are often reassured as to the quality of food products when they see well known symbols on the labels. As the respective leaders in their markets, OU and AVA present food producers with the ability to differentiate their products from the competition, by adding both well-known emblems that signify quality to millions of consumers.
According to research from Mintel, the top three reasons why consumers intentionally purchase kosher food are quality (62 percent), healthfulness (51 percent) and food safety (34 percent). (http://www.thestar.com/living/food/article/785423—kosher-food-market-growing). Likewise, the Vegetarian Resource Group reports that health is the most common reason for consumers purchasing vegetarian products. (http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/market.htm#market)
“There is good reason to believe that kosher and vegetarian certifications complement each other very nicely,” said Rabbi Mordechai Merzel of OU Kosher. “Given our increasingly complex food supply chain, consumers look to symbols such as OU and AVA for reassurance as to the quality of the food they purchase.”
Rabbi Moshe Elefant, Chief Operating Officer of OU Kosher, declared, “We are pleased to team with AVA to provide a more comprehensive approach to clients’ certification needs.”
OU Kosher currently certifies around 700,000 products in 80 countries. The AVA Global Certification Program certifies thousands of food products globally, as well as vitamins, supplements, skincare, and health and beauty aids. The AVA also offers a ‘Recommended’ status for vegetarian-inspired restaurants, cookware, and kitchen products.
